Job description

At fonQ, we’re on an exciting journey. We have successfully replatformed our e-commerce platform to Shopify. While the platform is currently in MVP status, our ambitions are big: we want to scale quickly, deliver an outstanding user experience, and drive strong business results. With millions of visitors every year, your work will have a direct and visible impact.

About fonQ

fonQ is the home store for anyone looking to furnish their home with style, character, and a touch of surprise. We offer unique interior items from leading brands, designers, and styles—everything you need to express your own personal style. Our ambition: to give every home character and a signature that’s truly its own. We believe in innovation, creativity and exceeding expectations.

What will you do?

As a Shopify Developer at fonQ, you will operate within a dedicated Shop & Digital Experience domain. This domain owns everything related to Shopify and the ecosystem powering our e-commerce experience—including integrations with tools such as Zendesk, Bloomreach, Algolia, and Channable.

This is a full-stack role with a strong focus on front-end development and launching new features, combined with solid backend knowledge to build reliable integrations and scalable solutions. You’ll collaborate closely with the Shopify Product Owner, UI/UX designers, and tech engineers to design and deliver high-quality features that directly improve the conversion rate and overall customer journey.

Your work will range from building polished, high-performance storefront experiences to maintaining and evolving the integrations that connect Shopify with our broader technical landscape. If you enjoy ownership, impact, and building at scale, this role puts you right at the heart of fonQ’s e-commerce future.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, build, and maintain high-quality Shopify storefront features with a strong focus on performance, usability, and maintainability

  • Develop and maintain Shopify themes, custom apps, and extensions, following platform best practices and guidelines.

  • Build and maintain integrations between Shopify and SaaS systems, such as Zendesk, Bloomreach, Algolia, and Channable.

  • Review code and actively contribute to shared standards and best practices within the Shopify domain.

  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation covering Shopify architecture, integrations, and workflows.

  • Proactively suggest improvements to Shopify architecture, tooling, performance, and developer experience.

Initiatives you might work on include:

  • Optimize the product discovery experience by improving navigation structures, landing pages, filters, and sorting. Implement (personalized) recommendation solutions to help customers quickly find relevant products and increase conversion.

  • Build and implement promotion features within Shopify, such as tiered volume discounts and advanced promotion logic. Refine the promotion UX to ensure offers are clear, compelling, and conversion-driven.

  • Develop and redesign campaign and landing pages that reflect our brand identity. Integrate campaign assets and social content into the Shopify storefront.

Job requirements

Here’s what makes a great fit for this role:

  • Strong experience with Shopify development, including themes, Liquid, storefront APIs, custom apps, and Shopify infrastructure

  • Excellent front-end skills, such as JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and modern front-end frameworks or patterns

  • Solid backend knowledge to build and maintain integrations using APIs, webhooks, and asynchronous workflows

  • Experience integrating Shopify with third-party systems (e.g. customer support, search, marketing, or feed management tools)

  • A good understanding of e-commerce concepts, data flows, and high-traffic web platforms

  • Education: You think and work at a Bachelor’s or Master’s level

  • Communication: You explain technical concepts clearly, whether you’re talking to teammates or non-technical stakeholders.

  • Personal qualities: Flexible, self-starter, hands-on, structured, solution-oriented, and always eager to learn.

IMPORTANT: Fluency in English and the ability to work in a hybrid setup are strict requirements. If you don’t meet these, please don’t apply, as we won’t be able to consider your application.

Lastly, what can you expect from fonQ?

  • A flat hierarchical structure with room for innovation in a supportive team

  • A welcoming and fonQ-y environment that fosters a culture of learning, exploration and problem solving

  • A diverse work week and a dynamic e-commerce company with plenty of space for new ideas and initiatives, regardless of your role

  • Unlimited and nicely priced lunch with a roof terrace

  • Exciting, inviting and frequent events to meet and spend time with your colleagues in Utrecht

  • A hybrid work environment with a structure that fosters quick and easy collaboration between colleagues.

In short, we get things done – and we do it well!
